Who will protect my motherland?
From the incessant terror attacks and marauding criminal gangs,
That have taken our nation captive with ceaseless shots and bangs,
That threatens to shatter our very essence, thin thread upon which our nationhood hangs,
Who will slay this monstrous dragon, and destroy its feral fangs.
Who will protect my motherland?
Amidst this latent political landscape, so littered with twists and turns,
Of a political class so clueless, endlessly bickering as the nation burns,
Fighting petty wars of party loyalties, while in essence just but hired guns,
Engaged in a vicious fight for survival, even as the insecurity tide foams and churns.
Who will protect my motherland?
When our youth are jobless, depressed and frustrated, dehumanized beyond scope,
Sleeping daily on a hungry belly, ravaged and afflicted by an addiction to dope,
Living fast and dying young, doing their best just to cope,
Providing a fertile ground for indoctrination, where religious fanaticism offers their only hope.
Who will protect my motherland?
When our security forces lack, even the most basic of equipment,
Living in poverty and squalor, yet expected to excel in law enforcement,
Protecting an ungrateful public, critical beyond the necessary chastisement,
Sacrificing their lives for no reward, unsung heroes dying in deployment.
Who will protect my motherland?
While we reject initiatives like “nyumba kumi” which are meant for our own protection,
Sacrificing them on the altar of partisan political interests, revelling in their outright rejection,
Yet complaining of inaction, fighting and dying in droves for lack of introspection,
That if only we were vigilant and gave concessions, the war on terror would finally gain traction.
Who will protect my motherland?
As we quarrel and squabble, terrorists grow stronger with every day notched on our calendars,
Yet we never see terrorism as neither a racial nor religious issue, but sinister political propaganda,
Tearing our beloved country apart, even as it decimates our very defenders,
If only we knew, that security begins with you and I, before we make it a national agenda.
